Do cats enjoying playing, or am I just annoying them?
I'm basically a dog person and work really well with canines and feel like it is easy to read their moods. However, I'm somewhat allergic to cats, so I don't have much experience with them.
I'm currently housesitting for friends with two cats, and I noticed that they get very active in the evening. Even though they are usually skittish with me, in the evening they become much more bold and aggressive, so I started playing around with a cat toy that my friend has -- a long plastic wand with feathers and ribbons on the end. The cats go *crazy* when I wave that thing around! They run and jump, climb over each other, and basically become totally different creatures. *I* usually end up getting tired before them, and have to put the toy away.
So they seem to enjoy this, but I also find cats hard to read, and their expression always seems vaguely disgruntled to me. So I'm wondering, do they enjoy this? Do they view this as play? Or am I just annoying or harassing them?
People don't understand cats, but they're highly social, and can bond with humans as strongly, if not more strongly than dogs can. Depends on the cat the owner, and the situation.
They're hard to read because they have such complex vocal and body language. Any vet will tell you a dog makes around 10 unique sounds, and a housecat will make upwards of 100 sounds. Those sounds mean specific things. Some are specific to cats, some seem to be reserved for humans.
So, yes, cats are nocturnal and love to play. I've found that people who can't identify cat body language have a hard time figuring out what they're trying to tell you. They usually get swiped, bitten or just snubbed. But here's some general pointers:
If a cat walks up to you and rubs its head on you, that's a friendly gesture. If you try to pet them, and they flatten their ears and/or whiskers, and look at you like "what the hell are you doing?" that's a sign to back off. A cat wanting to play or be social will have its tail erect, whiskers and ears rotated forward, and fur relaxed. While playing, they semi-revert into hunting mode, and play is basically their form of "practice" for hunting. Cats are habitual and follow a 4-step cycle: Hunt, Eat, Groom, Sleep, which is what cats in the wild do. So, when a cat wakes up, it's almost always Hunt time. In the absence of something to hunt, it becomes Play time. Nighttime, other cats, and catnip on toys make this step much more energetic.
When to stop: Cats are random, hedonistic, and mercurial. They do what feels good, when they want to, and when they get bored, they go do something else. If a cat wants to be left alone, it'll let you know, either by walking off or acting disinterested. When it's starting to get annoyed, it may semi-flatten its whiskers and its ears (the airplane-wing-ears look), but your best sign is its tail. If it starts flicking (not wide swishing, just repeated short flicks, kinda like drumming your fingers on a table)it repeatedly, that's a sign of annoyance. The harder and louder it thumps its tail, the more pissed-off it's getting. Every cat has a different annoyance threshold before giving you the ultimate bug-off sign (swat/bite), but generally, when you see the cat stop interacting and start with the tail flicking, go do something else.
Other notes: Signs a cat trusts you: It'll give you a series of slow blinks, or lie facing away from you (it's assuming you won't pounce from behind).
Also, you said you were allergic to cats. Contrary to popular belief, people aren't allergic to pet dander. The actual allergen is almost always a protein in cat saliva called Fel d1. When they groom, it remains as a residue on the fur, which gets into the air, and everywhere else. Washing a cat (if it'll let you do so and still live) and regular brushing can greatly help decrease the allergic response.
