How do I scold my cat?
My cat is 9 months old. He waits till early in the morning to become the devil kitten. He tears up the carpet, chews on cords, tears up the same chair, and gets himself into tight spaces to where he can't get himself out. I have scratchers and play towers all over my house. He has more than enough toys and everything a happy cat could ever want. He only does this around 5am when he knows that I am sleeping.
I've tried using the spray bottle, giving him a firm NO!, tapping him on the nose, and even rolling up a magazine to scare him. Nothing works! He know likes to be sprayed with water, plays with the rolled up magazine and doesn't respond to anything I do. He continues to do it even after I attempt to scold him. What can I do to show him who's boss?
This is absolutely normal young cat behavior. He's becoming a teenager and is just nuts. Believe it or not, with time his behavior will settle down...at least a little bit!
Try some Bitter Apple spray or a similar spray that is sold in most pet stores or sometimes places like WalMart. It is horrible tasting (and smelling--be careful not to inhale it). Apply it liberally to anything non-porous that you don't want him to chew.
Try double-sided sticky tape on the surfaces of furniture or carpet that he claws. It will annoy the heck out of you but is pretty effective to dissuade the cat. Some cats hate foil; crumple up a sheet of foil then straighten it out and lay it where you don't want him to be. Some cats play with it, though! Another option is the Ssscat spray (essentially a can of compressed air with a sensor) that activates when motion is detected in a user-set area. Or the Scat Mat, which emits a zap of static electricity when the cat steps on it. These are great because they work when you aren't around, the cat doesn't associate them with you but rather with stepping where he shouldn't.
The mats are pricey though. I haven't used either of these but I've been very tempted since my kitties insist on getting on counters despite also having a cat tree.
Has he been neutered? If not, that may help a bit as well.
The problem with cats is that it is very hard to catch them in the act. Plus, you can't catch them when you aren't around, so they often learn to do what they wish when they know you are gone (or asleep!). They also don't associate punishment with their actions very well, mainly because what they are doing is perfectly normal behavior and they can't understand why we don't appreciate it, or join in the fun! Unfortunately, this is often just part of owning a cat. It sounds like you are doing everything else right with the multiple scratching posts and toys.
When is he fed? We used to feed our kitties at 6 am and 6 pm, but got VERY tired of being woken up at 4 am by the starving sisters. So we delayed their feeding till 10 and 10, and it works much better. Usually.
Try to increase his playtime in the evening. Try to wear him out as best you can as late as you can, and hope that will make him sleep in a bit.
Try wearing foam earplugs when you sleep, as long as you won't sleep through your alarm. It sounds silly, but it really helps. I used to work graveyard shift and this helped me get some sleep in the mornings when the rest of the house was up.
