What is a good idea for a small pet. I was thinking of getting a hamster for my daughter but what else would?
be a good idea for a small pet? No dogs or cats wanted.
Rabbits DO NOT make good child pets (most of the time). They look adorable, but can be very aggressive and territorial. And they're always a bit territorial, no matter how tame they are. They do make great pets, but not for children. They can live 8-12 years, but average 5-8.
Hamsters are very fast and can be hard for children to keep up with (that also goes for Gerbils), and can also be pretty nippy. Hamsters live about 1-4 years, average around 3.
Rats and mice are very nice rodent pets (as stated, very smart - which can be a good or bad thing when they've figured their way out of their cage), but they can also be a little hard for children to keep up with, mice more so than rats. (I would recommend a rat.) Mice average 1-2 years, but they could make it 3-4. Rats average 2-3, but could make it up to 5.
As far as rodents go for a child's pet (I also don't know how old your daughter is) but, guinea pigs are wonderful. They're very personable. A bit skittish when you first get it, but that can be easily solved by handling it. They'll sit contently on her lap, or run around and do some pretty adorable things when let out of their cages. Guineas can age 8-12 years, too, but average 4-8.
