Flying with dog on Southwest Airlines...?
I've been stressing about this for a while now. I am planning to fly Southwest soon. I got the large bag from Sherpa and my dog HATES being in it... and she moves around in circles but it seems a little cramped for her.. I HATE to make her be in it for the flight duration (about 2 hrs 15 min) ... would she be ok? Will Southwest allow her on, even if she seems a little cramped? I'd like some personal experiences please, not the pet policy.
Also, I can fly American Airlines and my dog can go in cargo. However, the flight will not be non-stop/direct, making it 3-5 hour flight. Would she be ok down there for so long? I'm so stressed out about this I don't know what to do! I have to fly, there's no other options, and I really don't want to have to give her to someone else. I can take care of her, it's just getting her down to where I'm moving to that's a problem.
Good evening,
First and foremost, DO NOT CHECK YOUR PET AS CARGO! I say this because I used to work for American Airlines in college loading bags on the ramp. Are the dogs going to be okay in the cargo hold? Only if they are loaded in the right compartment! Planes have about four different compartments for bags to balance the plane in flight. Only one of them is pressurized and kept warm because at 35,000 feet, the temperature is like -50F! So if the puppy is in the wrong cargo hold, chances are it would either freeze to death or suffocate due to lack of oxygen. Unfortunately I saw this happen more times than I would like.
Okay, you mentioned you have the large bag from Sherpa, how large is it? And how much does your dog weigh? To be an in cabin dog, it has to fit under the seat in front of you. So, the carrier has to be no more than eight inches high and weigh no more than 20 pounds. Will the airline deny the pet boarding if it looks cramped? Probably not as Southwest likes to cram the people in those tiny seats. but if you're stuffing your dog to try and make it fit, the flight attendants would step in..
I know you didn't want the pet policy, but I had to mention it. Here's my personal experience. Give your dog a Benadryl before you head to the airport. Hopefully it won't make it more hyper like one of my dogs. The other one goes to sleep and will sleep for up to five hours with one pill! So flying with him is really easy. The other one I have to give a tiny bit of cough syrup with codine to do the trick. Make sure the pet goes relieve itself before the flight as that will make them anxious in flight if they don't. And FYI, no dog likes being in those little kennels because they are not used to it.
