How do I get my cat to use her new scratching post?
My cat has already been trained to use a scratching post and doesn't claw furniture or carpets, so that's not the problem. The problem is, we moved recently, and her old post was all torn up, so I got her a new one. But she doesn't seem to realize that it's hers! She still doesn't claw stuff she's not supposed to (she's very well behaved for a cat), but her claws are getting long and I don't want to have to trim them by hand.
This is by far the best method of enticing your cat to use a scratching post (see link below). It involves your participation by playing with your cat, so you'll actually have fun while bringing your kitty to the post.
Catnip is not the answer to this. Nor is catnip spray. The key here is to help the cat discover your new scratcher.
If you follow the suggestions you read and still the cat isn't cooperating, try these things: 1) get her a different type of scratching post, like a horizontal scratcher or a tall sisal rope scratching post ( I always recommend 3/8" Brazilian sisal rope). If you do a search using the following terms, you'll find them:

I know that you may have reservations about trimming your cat's claws, but it's really something that many cat owners do regularly. The key is to do it while your cat is relaxing with you, and not to disturb her position to make her uncomfortable while you trim the nails. If you do it swiftly and resolutely, you'll get this done without much struggle. Your vet can back me up on this, and if you ask her to show you how to clip your cat's nails, she'll be more than happy to do this. Once you've had a reasonabloe experience doing this, you'll be able to do it the next time.
