How can you make mice not stink?

We had four mice three or four years ago and I had SO much fun with them but they really stank, we had the type of cage that has mesh at the bottom for the poop to fall through that would fall on some nespaper and we cleaned it once a week, I think that's why they stank.
I now have a ten gal tank and really would like two or three mice again. With the other mice we would make Mouse Mania (mouse park in a big countainer/bucket) so they would not stay in their cage forever, also I would walk around the neighborhood with one on my shoulder (at least tried, they always tried to climb down lol).
My mom and dad don;t want couse of our last experience with the smell. How could I stop it? And the pet shop uses this bedding thats yellow and, like, little balls, I did not have a realy good look at them but they are very small so would be easy to clean the top layer that would have mouse poop.

Thanks!

I clean the cage once a week with little smell. Just mix some baking soda in with their bedding or place it on top and it will reduce odor by a ton. Also burning incense in the room you keep them in works wonders. I have recently started doing that and I swear it's a miracle worker. =]
