Is it ok for cats to live in the basement of your house?
I have many cats, and a ferret & bunny. We recently moved into a very large house, and we keep all the pets in the 900 square-foot, unfinished basement, as it was the only way our landlord would agree to let us move in with the animals.
The basement has 3 windows, and I leave the light on all the time. I go down there all the time to clean up and play with them, and I let one at a time come upstairs and play sometimes for an hour. Are they going to be healthy and happy down there?? We are waiting for furniture to be delivered so we can put couches in the basement for them to lay on, we are going to put up drywall and make it into their own little living space. I just feel so guilty-they had the run of the house in our last condo. I want to make sure I am not mis-treating my pets. 
Sorry, I know you want reassurance, but I can't give it to you. Animals need more than a basement. You already know that or you wouldn't be asking.
When I was 30 years younger I once kept my two cats in the basement as per landlord's instructions. One cat ended up crawling into the crawl spaces to die. I dug her out and let her upstairs into the sunlight and out into the backyard, but it took a year before she started acting normal again.
If the house is more important to you than the cats, you should find homes for the cats. If the cats are more important than the house, you should start looking for a new place and meanwhile let the cats upstairs since you will be moving again anyway.
The other alternative would be if the basement has an outside entrance and you could open it to let the animals outside. But even that is a stopgap measure, since shutting them in the basement means they aren't there to greet you when you come home, they aren't snuggled with you while you watch tv, they aren't sitting in the window while you cook etc etc.
