Doing home air conditioning work?
I have a dozen or so apartment buildings. Each spring, the air conditioning doesn't put out cold air in several of the units. I call the a/c repair place, and they put 2-3 lbs of R-22 in each unit and charge about $100/unit for adding the refridgerant. I know a license is needed to purchase R-22. I've seen online schools where you can take the test with an open book to get the EPA 608 type I certificate. Are these schools legitimate? The first thing they ask for is my S.S. # and last name when I try to register. What other hardware besides hoses, connectors and pressure gauges would I need to service the a/c units? Would it be cost effective over the period of 2-3 years?
First problem is that the AC company is adding Freon (brand name for a refrigerant) and not repairing leaks. This is illegal. Any unit that continually loses refrigerant is required to have leaks fixed.
As far as you getting the license, that is the cheap part. You also need a recovery system to catch old refrigerant while pulling a vacuum on the system. After repairs are done, you need a vacuum pump to pull a vacuum on the system. These two pieces of equipment will cost about $5000. Allowing refrigerant to enter the atmoshere starts with EPA fines of $10,000.
