Is my cat getting the right amount of food?
He just turned one year old and I am in the process of switching his food to adult indoor food, at the same time I want to start giving him some wet food. The wet food says to give 2 cans per 8 lbs. My cat weighs 10 pounds so I was thinking I'd give him 1 can (4 lbs) and half a cup of dry...is that a good amount? or is it too much? not enough?
I've found that a lot of cat foods overstate the proper amount to feed your cat. I think one can a day is good to start with, but you should definitely decrease the amount of dry food you're planning on giving him. Most dry foods also have feeding charts -- the higher-quality foods say to give a cat under 9 lbs between 1/4 and 1/3 cup of dry food a day, while the cheaper brands say between 1/2 and a full cup. (This is because the cheaper brands have a lot more filler, so your cat has to eat a lot more to get the same nutrition.) Since your cat will be getting around half his needs met through the canned food, I'd say you shouldn't give more than 1/4 cup of dry food, depending on the type: if you're already feeding a high-quality brand, give him a little less than that.
