my cat HATES my new kitten help!?
i have had my cat for about 3 months. shes 6 months old. i love her SO much. and i just got a baby 8 week old kitten. i live in a studio and i brought the kitty home and my cat hates her. (my 6 month old also just got her shots the same day as i introduced the kitten which i know would probably add even MORE stress) i expected this to happen. i have separated the kitten, putting her in the bathroom loving each of the cats for periods of 30 minutes about. showing my older cat she is still the boss. separate litter boxed, food dishes etc. my older cat just isnt acting the same and its breaking my heart. will this get better??? will she begin to act normal again? any advice??? there both girls by the way
It takes some time, no worries.
I have a seven-year-old cat that has been the Queen of the House for six years now. In July, I adopted an eight-week old kitten just like you did.
Now, cats are usually very territorial. So if you older cat has been the boss for 3 months, she's going to think that this new kitten is a threat and will take over her territory. You're doing well with seperating them for now.
Now, on the contrary to what some other users said, you should NOT merge their litter boxes and food bowls. Litter boxes are a little private space for your cats, and if you merge their boxes, your older cat will never use the box because the kitten's business is in there. Some cats (older or younger) prevent the other cat from using it at all. As for the food bowls, since your cats are at differant ages, they need differant levels of nutrition. Your little kitten is still in the 'first life stage' food. (I believe it's 8-12 weeks) whereas your older cat is in the second life stage (4-6 months). So you should keep their food seperate. As for the water, before your kitten and cat have had ALL their shots, it's dangerous to have them drink the same water. Cats can have a disease that's transmitted by their saliva. If this goes into the water bowl by one cat, and then five minutes later another cat comes to drink out of it, both cats will have the virus.
And NEVER punish your older cat by spraying her with water. It's not her fault that this new kitten is here! This will just make her hate the kitten more, because she will think "This new kitten has made my friend (which is you) hate me! I've got to get that kitten out of here!"
Now, most cats eventually warm up to the new kitten. Here's some tips on how to do a slow introduction that will begin the slow but steady road to friendship:
- Take a towel and rub it all over the kitten's body so it absorbs her scent. Then let your older cat have a good sniff of it every day so she gets more used to the smell.
- After that, put your kitten near the door of your bathroom and bring your cat over to the other side of the door. They will look under the door at each other and maybe meow, hiss, growl, whatever. Don't seperate them. Wait until one of them walks away.
- Then, after you've done that for about a week, bring the kitten and the cat into the same room. Try and make sure this is an open room with lots of escape routes for both of them. Put the kitten down on the floor. The kitten will go over to the cat and there will be some hissing and growling. This is okay. If any claws go out, seperate them. Do this for a while until they can stay in the same room without attacking each other.
However, some cats never get used to another feline in their territory. In rare cases, they will just attack each other all the time, in which case they'll need to be seperated all the time.
Usually if they don't bond well, they just plain-out ignore each other.
But luckily, many cats warm up to the kitten eventually. It just takes a little time. My cat was really tolerable of my kitten, and never touched her. My kitten playfully 'pokes' my cat, but she never uses her claws. They chase each other around hissing and growling at each other, but they also sleep together on the couch. They've touched noses too.
So as long as there's no scratching and biting, just let them be. It will take a while, and I know you think that they're going to kill each other (trust me, I thought that my kitten's eye was going to be poked out), but it's all worth the wait.
