Good way to keep cats from killing birds at a feeder?
I have a couple different feeders out. 2 are on a double shepherds hook (a perch feeder and a finch sack), and also a sort of platform feeder I made myself, which is attached to a pole. I also do some ground feeding. I have chased off 1 to 3 cats at a time which are hiding under a group of shrubs near the feeder, 2 adults and a small one. Sometimes it's just the small one. Have killed 2 birds in the last couple weeks, this last one I think was a very pretty goldfinch. I know, they're cats, they just do that......
But if I want to have "live" birds around, any suggestions? I am thinking move the feeders into the lawn away from the shrubs might help, and have to move them to mow the grass. Unless there is another way?
I would move the feeders or take down the shrubs that they hide in. Make sure the feeders are near a tree so the birds can get cover asap if they are chased by cat. Also may want to put breakaway cat collars with bells on these cats even if they are strays. This warns the birds that they are coming. I went as far to put in a automatic sprinkler that is motion detector. Birds love water cats dont. When they get close oops water goes on. Just make sure it does not reach the seed to mold it. Good luck. I have hawks and cats that like to dine on my poor feeder birds.
