What is the best way to potty train a bichon frise?

I might be getting a bichon frise in a week. I don't have time to crate train it yet, so i was wondering if it would be better to MAT train it or to LITTER box train it?
When the summer starts and i no longer have school, and when my puppy would be older, i will start to crate train it. My one concern is that will it be hard to crate train him if he was already mat or litter box trained? Thanks for the help :]

If you do not have time to crate train, then you really don't have time to take home a puppy at all.

Crate training is the easiest way to house train a pup. Generally, a pup will not potty where he/she sleeps. It is not cruel. My pups are both 1 year old and they still go in their crate happily when I leave the house., My boys will go into their crate on their own - it is their safe haven,.

If your concern is that you cannot be home during the middle of the day to let your dog outside, then you should seriously consider whether or not you are able to take on a puppy. A puppy needs to got outside at least every few hours. Perhaps you should consider an older dog instead. Once trained, they can easily go 6 to 8 hours (in a pinch)

The problem with pad or litter training is that you aren't teaching the dog to go outside. You instill a behaviour that going inside is ok.

I know alot of people do it, but I really discourage it.
