Pet Rat Cages - which one?
I have been searching for cages for a while now, and I cannot decide between two in particular.
The Rat Lodge (R-680) VS. The Large Ferret Carrier (CC-3018)
http://www.martinscages.com/products/cages/rat/ 6th from the top and http://www.martinscages.com/products/cages/ferret/ second from the bottom, respectively.
the ferret carrier is cheaper and collapsible. it has a bar spacing of 1"x1". It is slightly smaller, measuring 30"x18"x18". with shipping and handling, it will cost $75.
the rat cage is more expensive, and requires assembly. however, the bar spacing is 1"x1/2", which is safer. It is a bit bigger, measure 30"x24"x18". with shipping and handling, it will cost $100.
Rat owners - which would you choose and why?
Thanks a ton!
the ferret carrier requires no assembly, just unfolding.
The Rat Lodge R680 (also R670) comes **highly** recommended by many rat-keepers on the Yahoo forums. It has been reported however that these Martin's cages can be a little tricky to set up. It's a 2-person job for sure. Instead of the C-clips and the special tool (comes with) needed to keep the panels together, some people say a pair of pliers works just as well, and others are just putting the panels together with cable ties. Cable ties will give you the ease of breaking down the cage to make it portable should the need arise. My understanding is that the cage put together with the c-clips makes it a perminate fixure.
Personally, I love the look and the ease of assembly of the ferret cage. As for the bar spacing on the ferret cage? I bought 2 storage bins from a liquidation store that was going out of business and selling off their store fixtures. The storage bins are tall rectangular units with 1"X1" mesh metal frame. I converted them into rat cages and neither my girls, nor some young boys, have thought to escape from it. But you are going to have to make this a judgement call for your needs.
Martin's is so familiar with us rat people that they have become friends with many forum members (you are a member of one of those forums). We are told that Martin's will follow any special instructions that you give them to make your cage to your specs.
If it weren't so expensive for us Canadians to purchase, and have shipped, either of those cages, I would get them both in a heartbeat. But it would cost me 3X what you would pay to get them.
It's the baby rats that are escape artists and because of this I always house them in converted tote cages until they are big enough that they won't squeeze through the bars of a barred cage.
