Kitten got fixed today but he wants to run around still?
So my little man got fixed today, and they said to keep him calm for the next day or two (of course) but since he's been home, he's been himself. He is still running around and chasing after our other cat, jumping on his perch by the window...everything he would do on a daily basis.
Is this a normal thing? The last time I had an animal young enough to fix, I was only a kid myself, but I remember my dog being kind of lethargic.
He was at the vet for several hours to recover, but I was expecting him to still want to sleep it off...anyone have this happen?
I'm just worried he'll hurt himself because maybe the pain meds they gave him are still in his system and he can't feel anything....
As to expecting him to sleep after he got home - cats recover much quicker from the newer anesthesia than ones used just a few years ago.
We had a female spayed a couple of months ago and she was wide awake and ready to go when I picked her up, not too long after the surgery.
Also, some vets will not allow you to take the cat until they have come completely out of the effects of the anesthesia.
We have neutered 11 male cats and spayed 6 female cats over the past 21 years.
We have never restricted their activity afterwards and have had no problems.
There is far less danger of a male pulling the incision open than a female. The incision in the male's scrotum is very small and located in an area where there is little strain, even when the cat runs or jumps.
You can pretty much let him do as he likes. Just check the incision occasionally.
If he wants to lick the area, let him. You should only intervene if he starts to tear at the sutures.
That is if sutures were even used - we've had male cats whose incisions were not sutured, instead the vet used surgical adhesive.
Just keep an eye on him, he should be just fine.
The only danger is the incisions being torn open and bleeding occurring - from the skin of the scrotum, not from any internal organs or such.
Remember that, unlike a spay surgery which is abdominal surgery, the surgery done on a male cat consists of only a small incision in the scrotum through which the testicles are pulled out. Some vessels are then tied off and the testicles are clipped off.
It is very minor surgery with few risks.
Even spay surgery is a fairly low risk surgery and we have let our females do as they like after getting home. We do check their incision quite often but we have never had a problem with any of them.
As to the risk of a male's activity tearing open the incision, take it from a human male, that incision is in an area where there is very little risk of any strain being placed upon it. Not that I've had the same surgery, but I know a bit about the equipment and how it responses to movement and activity
