Making a Scratching Post. Would this work?
My cat likes his Cardboard Scratching Pad or Box or whatever you want to call it but I want something for him to be able to use vertically.
I was thinking about getting a piece of wood that is 12 inches wide and 4 feet tall and using a piece of scrap carpet adhered to it with glue on the front and staples on the back.
I would use a long screw in each corner to affix it to the wall so he can't pull it down no matter how hard he scratches. (I have plaster walls so I don't need drywall screws)
What are your opinions on my idea?

We have something very similar and it works great for our cats.
We screwed 2x4's to the wall, upstairs and down (where they aren't too noticeable).
We screw the first to the wall, and a second on top of that so they stick out from the wall more.
We didn't even have to put rug on it, they just scratch that.
It took a while to get them used to it. Any time they'd scratch something else I'd put them on it. I also made scratching noises with my nails (not sure if they were interested in the noise, or copying me or what ... but it would get them to scratch). And initially would give them a treat when they used it. I'd also put their paws up on it. They'd run away initially, but they did catch on.
Took a bit of effort, but it works. If your cat already likes to scratch something ... you can put that right next to it, shouldn't be too difficult.
Make it tall enough so they can get a good stretch out of it too.
You do need to somewhat teach them to use it though! We are on cat #3 that we taught to use it, it's not that difficult.
