Ferret question help please!?
i am thinking about getting my first ferret but i am worried about a few things. i currently have 2 dogs that are kept downstairs and 3 cats that each have their own spaces upstairs. my ferret will be kept indoors in a cage, either in my room or our spare room.
1)if they meet will the ferret and cats fight?
2)if i got a playpen would that be ok to let him out in while i wasn't there? (just for about 30 mins or so)
3)if it saw stairs would it go down them?
4)how long would an average walk take?
by now you could probably guess i know almost nothing about ferrets so any additional information would be VERY much appreciated!!
I live in a small town in England that has plenty of fields right next to my house
Hi, i'll try to help.
As far as cats and ferrets are concerned, i'm no expert as my cats are indoor cats and my ferrets are outdoor ferrets, but i can say that many cats and ferrets do get on when properly introduced to each other, but your cats may keep their distance when you first bring it home anyway, i know from experience, i often have a cat following me when i walk them.
As long as the playpen is very secure and they have somewhere to sleep with food and water then they should be fine, ow and keep them out of direct sunlight. If the cats and or dogs are in the room at the time, ensure you have a cover to the run as they may be an easy target.
Yes, i can certainly say that if a ferret saw stairs they would go down them, ferrets are very inquisitive and if you are to let them roam about the house or even one room, it will need to be ferret proof, e.g. gaps under kitchen units will need to be blocked etc.
Walks all depend on the ferret and how far it and you are happy to walk, i must warn you that when you first take them out it will take a very long time to go what seems like nowhere, but after a lot of patience and persistence, they will happily walk alongside you. But again, it all depends on the ferret, e.g. one of my boys (woody) will go for about a half hour and what to climb up me and go to sleep, whereas my other boy (smokey) will happily walk for hours.
here is some more usefull info:
They are a bit like dogs, in the way that you can walk them if you wish, and they are also like cats by how friendly they are and that they love nothing more than to play with you and then curl up on your lap. They also do not take up as much time as dogs and cats, you don't have to have them out all of the time, you can have them around the house during the day and in their cage at night, or they can just live outside 24/7
The best food you can give a ferret is dry ferret food from a pet shop, you can also give them dog food, but not on a long term basis as it does not have enough vitamins etc in it, you can also feed them on chicken and rice which they seem to enjoy, they can also have an occasional treat of sultanas.
They smell! so to combat this you can give them regular baths using ferret shampoos, also keep their living space clean to reduce the smell, the other thing is that you can get them neutered and have their glands removed.
Ferrets are very hyper animals, so make sure that they have plenty to play with, and if you can't spend most of the day with them then i would recommend getting more than one. You can also take them for walks on a lead just like you would a dog, although they will not walk very well they will soon get used to it.
When they are babies they will bite, so if you either flick their nose or squeeze their paw every time they bite you they will soon work out that it is bad for them to bite.
Um... i think that's it, hope i helped.
