Introducing a new kitten to a dog and rabbit?
I recently acquired a new kitten last Saturday and my roommate has a Newfoundland and a Flemish Giant Rabbit (15 lbs) who get along great together. The dog knows theres a kitten and is very curious and I know that she would never purposely hurt the kitten, but because of her size I am worried. I've also read that rabbits often become the boss of cats is this true? The cat has been allowed to explore and become familiar with the house all by herself, but its not fair to keep the dog locked up in my roommates room.
I have a very excited 110 lb. Chocolate lab, and adopted a 12 wk. old kitten and brought him home. I set up everything at first in my bedroom for the kitty and put up a baby gate at my bedroom door so that my dog couldn't get in the room, but the kitty could get out if he felt the need to. My dog is crate trained, so when we left the house, she would be in her crate, and the kitten would roam the house freely. It took about 2 weeks for the kitty not to fear my dog. I just let my dog get close to the kitty (like by the bathroom counter, so that the kitty could escape when needed.) And the kitty would actually let my dog sniff him and lick him. When he had enough, he would move away from the dog and climb the countertops. You will find that kittens can defend themselves, and actually scare off the dogs. Also they are much quicker and agile, and fit into small spaces more than a larger dog. Like I said, after a couple weeks of letting them figure each other out, now they actually lay next to each other on the couch, and play from time to time. I was scared to death that my huge dog would crush the little kitty, but it's funny how my kitty rules my dog in our house! Good luck, don't worry, they will be fine.
