If you're allergic to cats, do cat allergens harm your lungs as bad as second hand smoke?
I heard that if you're allergic to cats, their allergens can harm your lungs as bad as second hand smoke. In the same way as your lungs damage themselves by overreacting to smoke (inflaming and forming scar tissue), they do the same things when exposed to cat allergens.
Is this true?
Second hand smoke doesn't harm you the way the media makes you think. If you sit in a smoke filled room all day, you might be breathing in as much smoke as you would from one or two cigarettes. When you suck it directly from the stick, it's so concentrated, but it's diluted after it's been exhaled.
So the answer is, if you're allergic, the cat allergens may very well be worse than the second hand smoke.
