What is normal activity for my pregnant cat?
I believe that my cat is about 3 weeks pregnant. She is not really eating, sleeping all day, and only wakes up to groom herself (a lot!) and then goes back to sleep. Is this normal behavior? When should I be concerned about the lack of appetite?
Just like with women, cats behavior can vary greatly when pregnant. Some want to be left completely alone, some won't let you out of their sight, etc. I haven't really seen lack of appetite in my expecting cats before. First thing I check for when my cat starts eating less is fever. Feel the ears and nose to see if they feel warmer than usual to you. When cats are feverish they do little more than sleep. If there is no apparent fever then try mixing some canned food with your cat's dry food (if you feed your cat dry food). If you feed your cat canned food then I'm not sure how you'd go from there. If you have a vet you regularly use then you can often leave a message and have them call back with advice for free. If they don't return your call in a day or two you can visit the office yourself and ask. Most vets I've encountered are always willing to take a couple minutes to answer any questions you have. It isn't the kind of field you get into for the money. Hope this helps!
