When does a leopard gecko reach adulthood?
I bought a leopard gecko today from petland-that they had just gotten it in a few days ago. It's 2 inches long, very small, and they had it in a 10 gallon tank with 2 baby bearded dragons...which was a really stupid idea on their part.
I set up the tank, 10 gallon for now as many youtube videos suggested. I have other lizards but now finally have the chance to get a leopard gecko I've wanted for a while now.
It's very active, hardy, and seems to be in good health-walks on all fours, runs, tail moves in wavey motion, and it's a little chubby. But I'd like to know how long it will take before it gets big enough to handle. I let it walk on my hands a while ago but I feel like it's too soft to be handled. You can tell he's young bc the claws are there, but the nails are still very light-and he has some pink still-besides his blue yellow/black and grey.
Well sounds like you have the right idea with the tank. When it's older, then I would suggest a 20 gal tank. Trust me, they do outgrow the tank quite quickly.
Oh, and if you want to know when exactly to handle them is around a week. yes they may be soft and small, but those little Leo's have a tough reputation! just be careful not to squeeze him. Oh, and if you are wondering when they become 'adults', it's around the time they become sexually mature. Meaning, when you can see that the Leo either has hemi-penal bulges and pre-anal pores, or it doesn't even have them, meaning it's a female. (Don't expect a male. They usually don't sell them. But hey, if it was in the tank with a Beardie, then anythings possible.) If you want a time date when they are adults, then around a year to 16 months.
